OPEN REGISTER - CUSHING'S SYNDROME
Hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's Syndrome) is a not uncommon problem in middle aged and older dogs particularly in smaller breeds. There are suggestions that the condition may be more common than average in the Border Terrier and we are keen to find out if this is actually the case.
To this end the Breed Health Group is now setting up an Open Register of dogs suffering from the disease. We would appreciate it if owners could supply their dog's pedigree/Kennel Club Registered name and also if they would fill in a copy of our Health Questionnaire. The names of affected dogs would be viewable to all, unless otherwise indicated by the owner.
Please submit the following to Eddie Houston, MRCVS the Border Terrier Breed Health Co-ordinator at earth.wise@btinternet.com :
There is no shame in owning or having bred a dog affected by this condition and we hope that by publicly sharing this knowledge we may get a better insight into any possible genetic bias towards the disease and will be in a better position to undertake pedigree analysis if it does look that our breed has a higher than average incidence of it.
Although the disease may be strongly suspected on clinical signs, it can only be confirmed by a veterinary surgeon by means of either an ACTH Stimulation Test or a Low Dose Dexamethasone Suppression Test.
For dogs to be entered on the register we would require them to have been positively diagnosed by one of these two tests.
There is a lot of information available about this condition and a brief overview is available on our website.
It is hoped that a further Open Register will soon be introduced for Gallbladder mucocoele (GBM), once agreement has been reached on the diagnosis requirements for dogs to be included.
